Letter to the Editor from Saint Mary's Vestry
To the Editor:
There has been much press coverage of the Episcopal Church during the past few weeks because of the lack of agreement in the recent General Convention over certain issues concerning common life and governance. We at St. Mary’s feel that an unnecessarily negative picture has emerged from sometimes sensationalized reporting.
It is not surprising that there is disagreement in the Episcopal Church as it represents a cross section of America and includes people from all political philosophies and of all lifestyles. Naturally, reaching consensus on any controversial issue is difficult, sometimes impossible. However, that does not mean that dialogue should stop, nor does it mean that lack of consensus is to be interpreted as defeat.
We at St. Mary’s are a microcosm of the Episcopal Church, with a parish family of varied and interesting people from all different backgrounds, approaches, and orientations. Do we agree on everything? Hardly. Do we gather weekly to enjoy fellowship, to worship together, and to proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord? Absolutely!
In fact, rather than seeing diversity as something negative, we have come to view it as something very positive. Sharing in life and ministry with people who may view the world differently from ourselves keeps up open to the mysterious workings of the Holy Spirit in our lives and allows us to be a welcoming church for all people.
Yours in Christ
Members of the Vestry of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church
